Manchester City successfully retained their Premier League title last season, with an impressive tally of 98 points. The title went down to the last day of the season with Liverpool, who only lost one game all season, just being pipped. Huddersfield, Fulham, and Cardiff all failed to impress in the season and were relegated to the Championship.
Norwich and Sheffield United were promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season finishing first and second respectively. They will be joined in the top flight of English football by Aston Villa after they beat Derby 2-1 in the playoff final. The Premier League fixtures for the 2019/20 season were announced last week with the campaign set to kick off on the 9th of August when Liverpool host Norwich at Anfield. 1. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool Vs Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City:-
Champions Manchester City will be going all out for the rare feat of winning three titles in a row. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, City’s bitter rivals became the first and so far the only team to win three back to back Premier League titles.
The Cityzens, one of the best sides in Europe at the moment, have been delivering some beautiful football since the start of the 2017/2018 campaign. Sergio Aguero had yet another brilliant goal scoring campaign, Raheem Sterling continues to prove his worth while Aymeric Laporte has been rock solid at the back.
And if there is any team that can stop them, it is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Liverpool’s 97 point haul wasn’t enough to push them to the first position on the EPL Table and Jurgen Klopp’s men will be expected to put forth another title challenging season. They are full of confidence after lifting the Champions League trophy last season and will hope to clinch their first ever Premier League title.
The Reds have the best defense in the Premier League commanded by arguably the best defender in the world right now, Virgil Van Dijk. Moreover, their proficiency in attack cannot be overlooked as they have scored more goals than any other side in the Premier League last season barring Manchester City.
2. The Rise of Tottenham:-
Tottenham Hotspur will also be on the campaign trail to finally win a trophy under Mauricio Pochettino. The Spurs have a young and talented squad but moreover a great tactician in Pochettino. Spurs are tuned to finish in the top four positions and have been consistently qualifying for the Champions League in the last four seasons.
Son Heung Min has been in flying colors, Harry Kane is fit and will look to regain his Golden Boot and Dele Alli has produced phenomenal figures at just 23. Hopefully with some new signings Spurs might just have enough to put an upper hand over their top four rivals and finish at the top.
3. A Resurgent Manchester United and Arsenal:-
The likes of Manchester United and Arsenal will be looking to bounce back after disappointing campaigns. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be determined to get off to a winning start in front of an expectant Old Trafford crowd on Matchday 1 against Chelsea.
Solskjaer’s refurbished Manchester United may just have enough to get the title. Since his appointment as manager at the Red Half of Manchester, the Old Trafford outfit has seen a huge surge. Moreover, his arrival has resulted in the likes of Pogba and Rashford finding their form again.
Arsenal’s main aim for the 2019/2020 season is returning to the Champions League. It’s a big ask given the competition they face, but with the right signings, the Gunners will realistically be able to challenge their ‘big six’ rivals.
4. Threats Posed By The Mid Table Clubs:-
There has been a huge rise in the quality of football played by the mid-table teams in the Premier League and teams like Everton, Leicester City, and Wolverhampton Wanderers can win matches against any of the top six teams. In the final five matches of last season Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United picked up 10 points between them. Wolves, Everton and Leicester had 23 points in their bag.
Leicester will be pushing to break into the top six this season. Jamie Vardy seems to have his mojo back under new manager Brendan Rodgers and was the top scoring English man in the Premier League last season. He scored goals for fun towards the back end of last season and was only four short of Salah, Mane, and Aubameyang.
Watford has been very steady in the Premier League for the last few seasons and Javi Gracia helped them get to the FA Cup final last season.
Crystal Palace also plenty of reasons to back themselves to be in the mix and complicate matters for London’s other top-flight representatives. Everything will fall in place if they can sign a goalscorer, keep Aaron Wan Bissaka and Wilfried Zaha.
5. Mid Season Break and VAR being Introduced:-
The new English top-flight campaign will be the first to introduce a mid-season break for all clubs, following the footsteps of other major European leagues who observe a winter break. Players get time to rest and freshen up for the rest of their campaigns. The Premier League will also use VAR for the first time in all games. This could end up changing the result of various matches and bring about a shift in the points table.
All this only suggests that there would be so much drama unfolded in the coming months and we would be experiencing an immense thrill in the 2019/2020 Premier League Season.
