Cedric Bakambu Goes to Olympiacos

In a Twitter announcement published on September 16, Olympiacos revealed that they signed Bakambu in a free transfer deal. The forward from Marseille arrive at a pivotal moment for Olympiacos which has been struggling both domestically and on the international scene since July. The club desperately needs improvements and Bakambu looks like a good option.

The fortification of the Greek squad

After losing or drawing most of their games against the European competition including recent defeats to Nantes and SC Freiburg, Olympiacos is seeking ways to strengthen its offensive lineup and the midfield.

The first attempt at doing so was the acquisition of Conrad de la Fuente also from Marseille on a loan until the end of the season. Fans were disappointed by this particular transfer because Conrad seemed indifferent to the performance of the team and showed no emotions when failing to score in crucial moments for the team. De la Fuente was supposed to bring more offensive power but failed to score or assist even once since his arrival.

Many are afraid that the same story will continue with the signing of Cedric whose recent seasons were also subpar. He moved from the Chinese Super League in 2021 and went to Marseille where he played a total of 15 games scoring 4 goals and assisting twice. He was a stellar performer for Beijing Guoan, one of the top Chinese teams, but was not on the same level in Ligue 1.

Olympiacos needed improvements yesterday

The team started showing that it has problems with offensive and caves in the midfield in July when the squad lost games to all international opponents and a couple of domestic rivals including Aris Thessaloniki. Their painful lack of technical players in the front part of the tactical formation was apparent.

Olympiacos tried to fix the issue by signing 17 players coming from Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga, and many other prestigious leagues. Among notable signings in 2023 are Aboubakar Kamara from Aris, Philip Zinchernagel from Watford, and Doron Leidner from Hapoel Tel Aviv. We will see if Cedric’s arrival will change the performance of the team for the better.
