2006 Season

The 2006 season began with many questions, one known heading into the season was the schedule. A return to non conference games put JCA at Soldier Field against Mt. Carmel in week one. The old rivalry, and the venue had most prep football fans talking about this one all summer in anticipation of the kick off.

Mt. Carmel
Mt. Carmel had most of their starters back from a team that lost in the championship game the year before. An unbelievably tough test for a young group of returning Hilltoppers. Many of the players for JCA had some experience, but weren’t starters. They had talent, they just lacked the experience. How would they react on the big stage? Quite well thank you. JCA

In a game that saw the Hill undersized up front they played very well, leading late in the 3rd quarter, only to give up 2 TD’s and lose the opener 6-13.

Morris
Week two was a trip to Morris. A return to the stadium and team that abruptly ended the Hill’s chances in the quarterfinals the year before. Morris was coming off a shutout loss to Geneva in week one, but they made the appropriate adjustments before the JCA game and were able to score in the closing minute to win 21-27.

St. Pat’s
Week three was a trip to Hansen field to play St. Pat’s. Bad luck seems to follow JCA with injuries at Hansen, and this year was no different. Alex Foreman broke his ankle on the first play of the game, ending the season for a young man that was playing very well on the defensive line. While Alex is expected to make a full recovery for his senior year, the 2007 season, it didn’t help this season. The Hill defeated St. Pat’s 48-3.

Marist
Week four was the first home game of 2006, JCA hammered Marist 42-7

Benet
Catholic continued its winning ways back on the road at Benedictine University against Benet winning 54-12.

Marian Catholic
The Hill was back home for Homecoming against old foe Marian Catholic. A late turnover by JCA put Marian in a position to tie the game, but the defense came up big and preserved the 21-14 victory.

Notre Dame
Back on the road, JCA rolled up nearly 500 yards against Notre Dame winning 51-21.

St. Joe’s
Back at home in what would be the final game of the season at home for JCA, the Hill tuned up against St. Joe’s in preparation for the regular season finale against Carmel. 55-0 Catholic.

Carmel
In Mundelein, the Hill rolled to 450+ yards against Carmel but the Corsairs used the big play to pull out to a 30-14 lead. Catholic came back to close the gap, but it wasn’t enough, losing 29-37.

Morris
The loss at Carmel provided the IHSA the opportunity to match up JCA and Morris one more time this season. A return to Morris and possibly a revenge win for JCA in the loss in week two. But Morris rode a strong running game to the victory in what was a typical hard fought match up these schools have had in the last 10 years. 18-21 Morris advanced to the next round, only to be defeated by Normal in week two.

Season Summary
In the end, the emergence of Coby Fleener gave JCA the best passing target in a long time. For someone that had no impact the year before he deservedly received several division 1 offers to continue his football career.

Joining Fleener in division 1 next year will be linebacker Kevin Rouse who’ll attend Iowa and continue his football career with the Hawkeyes.

All but a starting player or two will return for the Hill next year on offense, including an all underclassmen offensive backfield.

Defensively there are a few holes to fill due to graduation, but the core of a very good team is there for 2007.

With the schedule reversing in their favor in 2007 with six home games (counting one at Soldiers Field), and a large majority of returning starters on both sides of the ball - the 2007 team looks to have a world of talent, experience, and potential for a run at an undefeated season, and an unprecedented 13th state championship.
