The sacrifice bunt, requires the batter to give attention to making soft contact with the ball, in order that it rolls a short distance into the infield, permitting the runner to advance into scoring position because the batter is thrown out at first. A batter, particularly one who’s a quick runner, may also attempt to bunt for a hit. A sacrifice bunt employed with a runner on third base, aimed toward bringing that runner house, is called a squeeze play. The batter’s potential reward of reaching base exceeds the drawback if the next pitch is a strike. Any runners already on base could attempt to advance on batted balls that land, or contact the bottom, in fair territory, before or after the ball lands.
